BAD FOOD GONE WORSE
BAD FOOD GONE WORSE is a project I did with Mr. Boonstra. The booklet was published in cooperation with KesselsKramer Publishing in an edition of 1000 copies. The booklet was sold out after a few months and became a true collectors item. We saw it being offered on Amazon for over 850 euro’s but if you’re lucky you can still get a used copy between 150 and 350 euro. We’re working on a new BFGW book at the moment. New shots and updates can found on https://www.instagram.com/badfoodgoneworse/

YURI GAGARIN MONUMENTS
A LEICA M6 with 35MM film series
This series is dedicated to the first man in space: Yuri Gagarin (1934-68). I travel through Russia with only two words in my mouth: Yuri and Gagarin. Most photographs has been taken with my analogue LEICA M6 camera and shot on Kodak Film. I found the most obscure brutalist monuments and memorials. By photographing and documenting his life I believe that the first man in space deserves to be more of a global icon and I hope my pictures will hang on a wall of a museum on day.
Yuri remains the most popular figure in the history of Russia, where he has the legend status of an Elvis or JFK – inspiring both love and conspiracy theories. But in the ‘West’, he remains obscure. We are out to change this. There has not been enough ‘updated propaganda’ that presents his remarkable persona and the uniquely Russian brand of hero worship that surrounds him. In short, there’s a void in the market for engaging, visual and internationally-oriented stories about both the man and the myth.

HAIRCUT 1967
I recently found two scrapbooks from a hairdresser in an Amsterdam second hand shop. The scrapbooks contain about a hundred male haircuts from the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany from the years 1967 & 1968. The outspoken faces of the models, their hair full of brylcream, their serious looks, one even more beautiful than the other. Together with the faded adhesive tape, the unintentional residual space and the discolored yellowed paper make this series in a very special find. Here a small selection, more on request.

COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHY
‘NEW YORK’
Street photography, shot with my LEICA M6 and 35MM film (selection)
(collector prints available in limited editions)
During my study at the Royal Art Academy in Den Hague (the Netherlands), I stayed for 3 month in downtown New York. I had a bucket of films and a super cool Nikon F2. The camera had a little hole in the curtain though and had an own technique with taking off the lens cap real fast off and on. I did not dare (or did not have the confidence) back then to ask people to pose for me. So I just passed quickly and disappeared as fast as I can. I shot about 20 rolls of film. I did not have the money to shoot more unfortunately.

KOELE KOPPEN
KOELE KOPPEN (COOL FACES) is a black and white portrait series I have done.
My goal was to fathom the photographed in one image. With two assistants (mostly good friends) I went to all sorts of concerts, box gala’s, clubs, parties, skate halls and a public market. When I had a person in front of my camera, I often left them completely to their own devices. Looking for that one moment that they fall out of their roles. In search of their concentration, their vulnerability, insecurities, unrest but also the cheerfulness and craziness of a growing up teenager.
The series is shot on film with my medium format PENTAX 6×7 analogue photo camera. I shot nearly all with an open aperture to create beautiful depth and blur in the portrait. Mostly the eyes are sharp and the ears and the tip of the nose are nicely out of focus.
The idea of the series has been copied so many times by advertising agencies, magazines, newspapers and other photographers. There is even a photographer with the name of Michiel van Nieuwkerk who does exactly the same, with nearly the same project title, every week for Dutch newspaper: Het Parool. Fortunately, I am always able to come up with something new 🙂 #renediditfirst

FADED
FADED is the name of the paper MAGAZINE I made by Mr.Boonstra. A selection of faded photographs found on the streets. The paper where it’s printed on will fade away like the pictures.
I still have some magazine laying around so send me an e-mail if you’re interested.
